A Human Rights Act would legally articulate, protect and promote everyone's basic rights and freedoms.
It would require the NSW Government and NSW public authorities to place human rights at the heart of all laws, policies and decisions.
It would also provide a powerful tool that we can all use to seek a solution if our human rights are breached.

The people of NSW deserve to have their human rights protected too.

As a constituent of your electorate, I ask you to support the establishment of an inquiry into a Human Rights Act for NSW.

I want to live in a state that strives for the values we hold most dear: justice, equality and a ‘fair go’ for all. I want my elected representatives to help build a NSW society based on a culture of respect for human rights across government, parliament, the courts and our communities.

There has never been a better time for NSW to conduct a comprehensive public inquiry into a Human Rights Act.

The Australian Capital Territory, Victoria and Queensland have already enshrined human rights in Acts of Parliament. For more than 20 years, these laws have been delivering meaningful improvements in people’s lives through fairer laws, policies and practices in governments’ day-to-day dealings with the community. Including in areas like health, housing, and education.

Recent major inquiries at the federal level and in South Australia have both recommended that states introduce a comprehensive Human Rights Act.

NSW now has a historic opportunity to consider learnings from these jurisdictions and begin a community-wide conversation about putting in place a similar law to protect the wellbeing of everyone in our State.

An inquiry will ensure that everyone in NSW can join a community-wide conversation about designing a human rights law that meets our State's needs.

As my representative in the NSW Parliament, I call on you to support an inquiry into a Human Rights Act for NSW.
